The Hills Community Concert Band is made up of talented and hard-working young musicians from the Hills district and beyond.
The Band
The Hills Community Concert Band (HCCB) was formed in 2006 under the musical direction of conductor Mark Strykowski. Since 2010, the band has been conducted by Steve Clark.
Right from its inception, the Hills Community Concert Band has been a prominent part of North Western Sydney's concert band landscape, performing in numerous community events and competing in championships both local and interstate. Our musical journey has taken us to cities such as Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Launceston.
The band is made up of students as young as 11 to students that have finished high school. We rehearse during school term on Thursdays, at the main hall at Jasper Road Public School from 4:30-6 pm.
We have our next big ‘Come and Try’ night On Thursday 28th Nov 2024, 4:30-6:15pm at Jasper Road Public School. The entrance is through the gate on Seven Hills Road (there will be some lovely people to tell you where to go from there). We will also have a little concert for the parents at 5:45pm. Any and all wind and brass instruments are welcome, along with percussionists and bass guitarists.
While the ‘Come and Try’ nights are a big event, you are more than welcome to come along and check us out on any week, not just the ‘Come and Try’ week. Simply send us a message and let us know, and we will happily welcome you to any of our rehearsals!
Our Band Director
Dr Steve Clark has been the conductor for the Hills Community Concert Band since 2010. Dr Clark has had extensive and broad experience as a conductor, composer, and performer. His passion is to teach music that is simultaneously meaningful, thoughtful, challenging, and fun.
Join the Band
Does your child's high school not have a concert band? Is your child in year 6 and looking for music that is a little more challenging? Is your child looking for a chance to expand their musical horizons and play music with a group of students that are as enthusiastic as they are? The HCCB prides itself on being able to provide challenging and enjoyable music in a great team atmosphere.
The primary prerequisite for joining the HCCB is at least 3 years’ experience on your chosen instrument. It is also highly recommended that students:
- are receiving private instrumental tuition
- have achieved 3rd Grade AMEB or higher
These criteria are not compulsory, but students who are not receiving private tuition or have not achieved 3rd Grade on their instrument may need to audition, to ensure that the HCCB is the right band for them.
The cost is $200 per semester which covers rehearsals, extra tutorials, sheet music, and food for special events.
Interested musicians are more than welcome to come and join us for a rehearsal to see what we do! We hold 'Come and Try' afternoons once or twice a year, but you can come along any time we have a rehearsal and have a play! We'd love to see you there!
